Untapped Potential: How Comensura is inspiring change for prison leaver employment with partners across the UK

At Comensura, we believe in the power of second chances and the incredible value that diverse life experiences bring to the workplace.

On 23rd September 2025 we were delighted to partner with HMP Drake Hall Prison, Veolia, Amey, HMPPS, and New Futures Network for a memorable event hosted at Veolia’s new event space in Cannock. There was a fantastic turnout from employers and partners who enjoyed a day that sparked honest conversations, challenged perceptions, and inspired action around employment opportunities for prison leavers.

The event kicked off with an energising introduction from Shilpa Parmar, Veolia’s Head of Employee Experience, followed by a keynote video from Lord Timpson OBE, a long-standing champion of prison leaver employment. His message was clear: meaningful work has the power to transform lives.

One of the most moving parts of the day was a panel discussion with individuals who had successfully transitioned from prison to employment. Their stories of resilience, motivation, and loyalty were a powerful reminder that with support and opportunity, people can thrive against the odds.

Panelists shared experiences with schemes like Release on Temporary License (ROTL), which helps prisoners reintegrate into the workforce before their release. The recurring message was that gainful employment is crucial for confidence and a sense of purpose. We also heard from Lisa Garnett, Governor at Drake Hall, who echoed the panel’s message, urging employers to take these opportunities seriously and help drive meaningful change.

Employer voices were equally important. Representatives from organisations such as Greene King, Amey, Iceland, and Veolia highlighted the unique strengths prison leavers bring, with the most important being the motivation and drive to succeed. They discussed the growing movement “Ban the Box”, advocating for the removal of criminal record questions from job applications.

Practical advice was also shared on overcoming internal biases and making meaningful commitments, with one effective strategy taking hiring managers into prisons to meet candidates and break down unconscious barriers.

The day closed with an inspiring talk from Caragh Arthur, a senior policy manager at HMPPS with her own extraordinary journey through the justice system. Her achievements underscored what we can all gain by giving people a genuine chance.

This event was not just a discussion, it was a call to action,” stated Hoa Ngo, Managing Director - Workforce Solutions Impellam UK & Europe. “At Comensura, we’re proud to stand alongside our partners in championing employment opportunities for prison leavers. By working together, we can change lives, challenge perceptions, and build stronger, more inclusive workplaces for everyone.
